California Doctors Can No Longer Discriminate Against Gay Patients

Wednesday August 20, 2008
California doctors can no longer discriminate against gay and lesbian patients based on their religious beliefs, ruled the California Supreme Court in a unanimous decision. The ruling overturned a lower court decision that allowed two Christian doctors to refuse fertility treatments to Guadalupe Benitez, a lesbian.

Many gay men feel apprehensive about getting medical help for fear of discrimination. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, fear of discrimination is one of main reasons gay men have a higher cancer risk. One reader shared his discriminatory doctor experience: "These records say that in 1987, you claimed to be homosexual. Is that still true?" the doctor asked him.

Hopefully, the California ruling will spread throughout the country, setting an example for health care providers and medical professionals everywhere. Until then, don't let the fear of discrimination deter you from seeking medical care everywhere. Here are tips on how to find a gay-affirmative doctor and how to come out to your doctor.

Are you a virgin, eagerly waiting for your love light to turn green? This reader asks:

Hi Mona,

I am in my early twenties and a virgin. I have never been with a girl or boy. I have never been on a date, kissed or even been touched by either sex. I have been very lonely and have reached a point where I don't care which sex comes along to take my virginity. All I really want is to be loved and wanted on an emotional level but also on a physical level.

Dear Never Been Touched,

Slow down there, bi racer. Sure you're about ready to explode, but don't just let anybody stew your goodness. I know: You can't stand it any longer. You need affection. True that. We all need some cuddle, tickle or full blown action in our lives, but what you don't want to do is get yourself in a situation that you can't repair. Far too many guys let their loins make decisions for them and too often they are poor decisions all in the name of preventing loneliness... read more step-by-step advice for this virgin.
