Cherokee Nation and Government Clash Over Gay Marriage

The landmark gay marriages in Massachusetts on May 17th were only the beginning for same-sex marriage rights in the States. A lesbian couple, both members of the the Cherokee Nation, were granted licenses to marry despite the 1996 Federal Defense of Marriage Act. Gay activists are confident that tribal sovereignty can be used to legalize gay marriages in the tribe. More on gay marriage!
