Gays Blamed for Hurricane Katrina

Thursday September 1, 2005
Homosexuality and religion are often side by side- at least in the context of debating the issue of same-gender loving people. Many gay-friendly religious organizations embrace gay people and welcome us into their house of spirituality. However, there are others that see homosexuality as an "abominable sin, worthy of death" as Reverend Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church preaches on his web sites.

Reverend Phelps claims that many devastating events, such as September 11th, the last Tsunami, deaths in Iraq, and now the horrific Hurricane Katrina are the result of God's wrath against gay people.

But Fred Phelps is not alone. In a recent report, Repent America, an evangelical Christian group joined Rev. Phelps in blaming the devastation of Hurricane Katrina on the Southern Decadence gay pride celebration traditionally held in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Are gay people to blame for natural disasters and devastation around the world or is there a place for gay people in the eyes of God?
