Gay Parents Have Less Money... And Less Protection

Monday September 26, 2005
The makeup of a typical gay family may not be what most people perceive, according to a recent research at UCLA. The study shows that same-sex parents have an average household income of $12,000 less than their heterosexual counterparts and according to the 2000 U.S. Census, gay and lesbian parents are also more likely to be African American and Latino. Overall, 46% of children with same-sex parents are of color.

Many worry about the well being of these families without the full benefits of marriage. Jennifer Chrisler of the Family Pride Coalition states, "What we share is that our families are left more vulnerable because we don't have access to the protections and obligations that come with marriage."
