Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel says gay marriage is his number three legislative priority. In an address that seemed to be a direct challenge to Gov. Pat Quinn, Emanuel made strong claim to his hit list and in what order he'll attack:
"One is retirement security and pension reform. ... Two, I was advocating ... a casino for Chicago, but one in which ... all of the resources will go into building new schools and modernizing our schools. ... Third, I will continue to advocate that we also pass marriage equality and end the discrimination on the books."
Although Illinois currently allows same-sex civil unions, it's mere label implies an inequality, especially given that civil partnerships in most states carry less rights than marriage. Emanuel says he plans to get "very involved" in the campaign to legalize gay marriage.
