NEWS: George Takei Joins Cast of Archie Comics

By December 5, 2012

Follow me on:

Star Trek legend turn gay rights advocate, George Takei is the newest character to join Archie Comics, as none other than himself.

Takei, 75, appears in Kevin Keller No. 6, the home of Archie's openly gay character of the same name, who joined the Riverdale community in 2010. Like Takei in real life, Kevin is a gay advocate in the fictional Riverdale and his adoration for Takei brings the actor and his real world husband Brad into the comic.

In the issue, Kevin and his classmates are assigned to write an essay about someone that inspires them. Keller chooses Takei. The story then goes on to chronicle Takei's life story, growing up as a Japanese-American in internment camps during World War II with his family to becoming a Star Trek icon and advocate for gay rights.

Takei says he's not ruling out a comic book of his own if the Kevin Keller issue sells well.

As a gay man solidlly in middle age and no longer as easy on the eyes as he he used to be, I love Takei. I don’t see him as being a role model, per se. but, his wit, possitive outlook and inexhastible energy proves that being gay don’t have to consign you to anynonimy and invisibility — even if you’re no longer as sexually appealing as they used to be. In fact aging gives you an opportunity and grow and sparkle as your own unique self in a way that perhaps you were too inhibited or busy to do before.
