Syphilis
Syphilis Rising Amongst Gay Men

By Ramon Johnson, About.com

Like Puma, vintage jeans and afros, syphilis is making a comeback in the gay community. However, even though in most cases it is easily curable by a shot of penicillin, it has once again become a serious health concern for gay men. And it’s understandable that we’d be blindsided by its resurgence, especially in the wake of the HIV crisis. The focus on prevention efforts and a cure for the growing AIDS epidemic allows some gay men to perhaps consider other STD’s like syphilis to be of a lesser concern. However, researchers around the world are not only recognizing a rise in syphilis cases, as in the case of syphilis studies in the United States, but have found that persons infected with the disease have an increased chance of contracting HIV. This alone escalates the concern over syphilis, not to mention the effects it has if left untreated.
