Allegations against Bishop Robinson stemmed from a member of the church that claiming made him uncomfortable during two brief public encounters. The member, David Lewis of Manchester, Vermont, made the allegation via email, but then admitted that the inappropriate behavior only included Robinson's hand on his arm and upper back during a conversation. The actions were found as "perfectly normal" with no inappropriate sexual comments made. Supporters of Robinson believed the claims were used in an attempt to stall or prevent his confirmation.
The Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is one of the 38 member churches, is divided over the issue of homosexuality and feel Bishop Robinson's confirmation may be a burden to its members. Some of the more conservative churches have even threatened to sever ties. However, the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams is known to support gay priests and according to MSNBC "is open to [the possibility] of two provinces" within the American church. Robinson's supporters say he was elected for his gifts not his sexuality.
