On April 1, 2001, the Netherlands became the first nation to legalize same-sex marriage, leading the world in gay marriage rights. As far back as 1998, the Netherlands introduced registered partnerships for same-sex couples, upgrading them to full marriage only a few years later. In 2005, the country legalized adoption by gays.
